Mojacar, Almeria

Almeria - Overview:

Mojacar is a spectacular Moorish fortress town, perched on a towering crag overlooking a shore graced by pristine beaches, lapped by the sparkling waters of the Mediterranean. It is believed to be the birthplace of American cartoonist Walt Disney. Like many other villages in south-eastern Spain, in the 1960's Mojacar was largely deserted as most of its active inhabitants moved north to find work in the factories of Barcelona and further afield.

In an effort to attract new residents, Mojacar's mayor literally gave land away to anyone who promised to build on it, and within a year picturesque Mojacar had become a thriving artists' colony.

Cultural tourists and discenring holiday-makers were also later attracted by the beauty and charm of Mojacar and recent decades have seen the development of its shoreline, with the construction of hotels and villas.

Fortunately, the village has still retained much of its original character, with its Moorish fortress El Torreon and the Arch of Luciana, as well as the enchanting labyrinth of whitewashed, winding streets.

Mojacar is only about two hours' drive from the vibrant city of Granada, where you can plan a day trip to visit the Moorish Alhambra, the Albaicin - the famous gypsy quarters, and the Cathedral. Mojacar is also home to the famous "Moors and Christians Parade" which is held every June.
