Parres, Asturias & Cantabria - Overview:

What is most remarkable about Parres is the protected landscape of Sierra del Sueve, with the viewpoint Mirador del Fitu, from where you can see the Cantabrian Sea. The charming mountain landscape around Parres is ideal terrain for climbing, walking, trekking, cycling and hiking.

The area enjoys a special, sunny microclimate and has an abundance of nature. It is home to wild roaming Asturcon native ponies, deer and fallow deer at the Sueve reserve. Parres is highly recommended for walking, cycling, climbing or soaking up local history and culture, as nearby are the Pilona and Sella valleys, the town of Lastres and the pre-Romanesque church of Santiago de Gobiendes.

In addition to walking, cycling, trekking and climbing, for those seeking even more adventure-based activities, the area offers a range of river-based water sports including fishing, river descents and canoeing, with the famous international canoe and rafting competitions held on the River Sella every August. Parres is also approximately 18km from the beach at La Isla in Colunga.

Picos de Europa:

Parres is an excellent base from which to explore the Picos de Europa. This fabulous region is still very unspoilt and natural; an area of high mountains, deep valleys and lush pastures. The grand mountains of the Picos de Europa are the most striking of all Spain's mountain ranges and one of the best for walkers. This is a great area for outdoor activities including golf, hiking, canoeing, bird watching, horse riding and trekking.

Birds and mammals are a major attraction and in the Cares gorge you can see griffon vultures, black redstarts, rock thrushes and wall creepers. Wild and domestic goats are plentiful and there is a small population of bears in the western mountains.

Sueve Mountains:

The Mirador El Fito lookout point, on the edge of the Sueve Mountains, is considered by many to be the most beautiful of all viewing points in the region. From this point, and along the whole of the Sueve ridge there are outstanding views of the Picos de Europa and the Asturian and Cantabrian coastline. Separated from the rest of the Cantabrian mountains by the Sella valley, the Sueve mountains developed independently from the Picos.

A special race of Celtic pony -the Asturcon - roamed freely in this range, fighting for its existence alongside wolves. Prized by many warriors for its adaptability to difficult terrain, Asturcans were used in missions as far afield as the Alps. These beautiful ponies still roam wild in what is now the protected reserve of the Sueve. In the higher reaches of the Sueve, and particularly on the northern side, there is a large population of fallow deer, unique to the region.

Coastal Asturias

Ovio, and nearby Villanueva, are pretty hamlets nestled within the undulating green countryside between the village of Nueva and the coast. Located midway between Ribadesella and Llanes, the main towns of this stretch of coast, Ovio and Villanueva are ideally situated for a quiet holiday. Nueva has bars, restaurants and shops and a colourful Saturday morning street market. The sandy beach of Cuevas del Mar is also nearby and there are lovely walks along the coastline and up in the hills behind. The spectacular Picos de Europa mountains are approximately 40 minutes' drive away.

Niembro

Niembro is a pretty farming village, approximately 8km west of Llanes, set in a south-facing position behind the coastline and close to a pretty tidal estuary. A short walk away are two beautiful sandy beaches. The village has a local shop, bar and restaurant.

Celorio

Celorio is a village west of Llanes and close to a beautiful sandy beach, popular during July and August. The village has all facilities such as bars, supermarket and restaurant.

Llanes

The pretty fishing port of Llanes is the main town on this lovely coastline. The old quarter with remains of the walls, the XIII century fortress (now the Tourist Office), the colourful harbour, the restaurants, bars and shops make this a busy centre. With the cliff-top walks, the pretty beaches, and countryside, the new 18 hole golf course, and the nearby mountains, this area is ideal for a lovely holiday.

Porrua, Santa Eulalia & Villa

These are small agricultural communities between the coast and the Picos de Europa, close to beautiful beaches. Porrua is the larger village and is set in undulating countryside near to Llanes. Santa Eulalia is situated in the open valley between the coast and the Sierra de Cuera mountains. It is in a sunny position, facing south, with beautiful views of the mountains. There are not many services in these villages, just a few bars and shops, but Porrua is famous for its good cheese. Villa is a pretty little hamlet in the hills between the coast and the Sierra de Cuera mountains in Asturias.
