Robriguero
Robriguero, Picos de Europa - Overview:
The small village of Robriguero is surrounded by mountains and very conveniently situated for exploring all the Picos de Europa, yet still within easy reach of the coast. Robriguero is situated on the headland where the valleys of the River Cares and the River Deva join at Panes, before the river continues to the sea at Unquera. It is in a magnificent position, with beautiful views of the green fields and mountains all round. The village of Robriguero is on a fairly flat level so is easy to walk around.
Robriguero, Picos de Europa - Getting There:
From the coast at Unquera the access is easy and only takes about 20 minutes. The last part, past Panes and after leaving the main road, is a 1.200 metres uphill drive on a narrow, winding but tarmaced country road. This levels out towards the village.
Robriguero, Picos de Europa - Activities:
The surrounding countryside is all beautiful green fields, hedgerows, fruit trees and mountains. It is also good walking country and you can follow the lane through Robriguero which continues on up the Cares valley towards Bores and Mier.
There is also a country road which goes from Panes on the opposite side of the valley to the main road, through Villanueva to Colombres and La Franca on the coast.
In the other direction Potes is easily reached, although the road does get a lot of traffic in summer. In Potes the road divides to the mountain pass of San Glorio, which is in Leon and leads to the rest of Spain and the lake of Riano.
The main road through Potes, a lovely old town, goes up the valley to Fuente De where there is a cable car to take you up into the real Picos de Europa mountains.
The spectacular Picos de Europa mountains can be visited by taking the road up to Potes and Espinama (south), or to Cabrales and Cangas de Onis (north-west). Urdon, 7km away, in the Hermida Gorge going to Potes, is the ideal starting point to walk up to the remote village of Tresviso, approximately 7km either by foot or on horseback, where you will find the famous cheese and cheese tasting is available. Normally people leave their car in Urdon. There are many local walks around this area that can be explored on horseback if you prefer.
Robriguero, Picos de Europa - Shopping:
Robriguero is just a small village of pretty houses, half way up the hillside. There are no shops, so you will need to visit Panes, which is less than 5km away, where you will find banks, cashpoints, doctors, 24hr health centre, chemist, bars, restaurants and small supermarkets.
Robriguero, Picos de Europa - Transport:
There is a bus stop with buses running to Potes and further afield. You might prefer Unquera for shopping, or even Llanes or San Vicente de la Barquera, but there are no hypermarkets along this coastline. You will often find the village shops are better for fresh farm eggs (ask for Huevos de Casa), and home grown vegetables.
Robriguero, Picos de Europa - Beaches:
The beaches of La Franca (18km away) and perhaps the best in the area, and Pechon (16km) which has more difficult access, are the nearest. San Vicente de la Barquera (26km) and its beautiful long beaches are only a little further along the coast towards Santander, about 10km from Unquera.
