El Roque - Overview:
Situated just under 2km from the fishing village of El Cotillo and its beautiful beaches and lagoons, El Roque is a relatively undiscovered, tiny village new to tourism. The village has a small supermarket, church and local restaurant. The way of life for the locals is simple and honest, giving you the chance to combine a beach holiday with a rural setting.
El Roque - beaches at El Cotillo:
Approximately 2km away from El Roque is the traditional old fishing village of El Cotillo. Situated on the north west coast of the island it consists of a quaint old harbour, a few shops, bars and fish restaurants. There is very little established tourist development here and most of the roads are dusty tracks. The main attraction of El Cotillo are its superb beaches.
A short stroll south of the village will bring you to superb sandy, virtually deserted beaches backed by cliffs. Care needs to be taken here when swimming, as the currents can be very strong. In contrast, to the north of El Cotillo, is a unique coastline where offshore reefs of lava have created a barrier against the ocean waves and protect quiet lagoons with sandy beaches. The still waters of the lagoons are warm and tranquil and attract hundreds of little fish. These are an added attraction and this area is ideal for snorkelling.
