Mogan
Mogan - Overview:
Sophisticated Puerto de Mogan is the most westerly holiday resort on the south coast of Gran Canaria. The enchanting fishing village and harbour is blessed with a fine sunny climate and has a lovely selection of restaurants and bars.
It consists of a delightful old town (built on one side of the bay) and the marina village area, where a variety of yachts from all over the world are moored - from the simplest to the ocean-going all adding to the overall quality ambience.
This is a more up-market Gran Canarian holiday resort with low-rise buildings. It aims to offer the discerning holidaymaker more quality than quantity, who prefer exclusivity in relaxing surroundings. A canal runs from the sea around the village adds extra charm to this particularly attractive resort - a welcome change from the high-rise developments further up the coast.
Mogan Climate:
The generally high year-round temperatures of the Canary Islands makes Gran Canaria an ideal choice for a winter sun destination. The climate in this particular spot of Gran Canaria is hot, sunny and extremely reliable, making Puerto de Mogan a perfect choice for sun worshippers.
Mogan Beaches:
The beach by the harbour is relatively small but well provided for with sun-loungers and beachside cafs/restaurants. There are other beached in this area of Gran Canaria, beyond Mogan in Veneguera and Tasarte. For serious beach lovers is the new Amadores beach, 15 minutes drive away from Puerto de Mogan, just before Puerto Rico, with an ample selection of bars and restaurants. Finally, Maspalomas, with its famous dunes and Playa del Ingls is a further 15 minuies drive. Before Puerto Rico is a sensational swimming pool and small beach at Taurito (payment to go in pool).
Mogan Activities:
There are a large variety of SCUBA diving courses available in Puerto de Mogan (details at Hotel Club de Mar reception). Other off-beach attractions include a yellow submarine offering visitors trips to the underwater world off shore and small replicas of old sailing ships taking passengers to the beaches of Puerto Rico and Maspalomas.
Deep sea game fishing trips give you the opportunity of make the catch of your life with world record size tunas or marlins and details are available from the harbour front. Other outdoor activities in this area of Gran Canaria include flying, parachuting and sky-diving at Aeroclub, Maspalomas.
Mogan Nightlife:
To preserve the peaceful and tasteful nature of the resort, nightlife in Puerto de Mogan is generally limited. It is a picturesque Gran Canarian fishing port, a blend of fishing village, marina and chic holiday resort, with a small, but excellent and well-protected beach, which makes it a favourite for children.
Mogan Out and About:
A good local bus service operates from the area immediately behind the port but we recommend a hire car if you wish to properly explore Gran Canarua. Mogan town, 8km inland has spectacular mountain views and a few good restaurants and should not be excluded.
Arguineguin, past Puerto Rico in the Playa del Ingls direction has a good open-air market on Tuesdays and can be reached either by bus or boat, details of the latter available on the beach-front. Remember to haggle here and in all Gran Canarian markets as much as possible for whatever you decide to buy. In this small town is Restaurante Bahia Grill where you can sample some excellent local dishes in front of the bay.
An interesting family day out is a visit to Gran Canaria's Palmitos Park, with its collection of exotic birds, aquarium, cactus garden and parrot show. It can be reached by bus from Puerto Rico, with buses leaving at 10.00am and midday.
