Countryside, Alajero, La Gomera, Canary Islands

Alajero - Overview:

Alajero is a small, typical rural village of La Gomera. Located on the southern slopes of La Gomera, only 9km from the sea at Playa de Santiago. The village enjoys a pleasant sunny climate but is 800m above sea level making it a little cooler than the coast with chilly evenings in winter. There are a couple of bars and restaurants in Alajero, which has a population of about 300, and this is a very quiet location that would suit those seeking a peaceful rural holiday. Natural attractions include the particular geology and fauna of the coastal area, and the calm, crystalline waters of the beaches at Santiago or Erese. One of the few specimens of the drago tree found on the island grows here close to Agalan.

Alajero - Geography:

Alajero is located on the southern coast of La Gomera, south-west of the capital San Sebastian de la Gomera, just off the main highway. The village of Alajero is located in part of the ancient aboriginal territories of Hipalan and Orone, in the south-western part of La Gomera. The Santiago ravine forms the boundary of San Sebastian, dividing Playa Santiago in 2 administrative districts, Lomada de Tecina and Laguna de Santiago.

Approaching Alajero, La Gomera, Canary Islands

During the winter months, the climate is generally foggy. The local inhabitants take advantage by planting fruit, vegetables and other crops during the inclement weather. These are planted in November and harvested in May. Agricultural production today is not as abundant as a few decades ago. Following the agricultural crisis in the 1960s and the 1970s, the population left, so many of the smaller villages in La Gomera are almost abandoned today.

The municipality has seen little prosperity and tourism is not as common as in other parts of the Canary Islands. However the surrounding lush landscape is an absolute haven for nature lovers, walkers and mountain biking.
