Mazo
Mazo - Overview:
Mazo is conveniently located just a short drive from the beach, Santa Cruz and la Palma airport. It is an idyllic location for nature lovers seeing a peaceful holiday walking and cycling.
Mazo - Out & About:
This area, located in the south-east of La Palma, includes the island's airport. Mazo stretches from the forested heights of the Cumbre Vieja mountain ridge to the rugged coastline. The Cumbre Vieja is a beautiful nature park with a large number of marked walking trails.
On the coast, just a stone's throw from the La Palma airport is the small Playa el Pocito beach, from where you can watch the planes land.
The church Ntra. Sra. de Los Dolores and is a good example of 18th centry Canarian architecture. Alternatively you can discover the ancient world of La Palma's ancestors by taking a walk through the Parque Arqueologico de Belmaco. There are handicrafts to be seen in the museum Casa Roja, especially embroidery which is a speciality of the island and lovers of spectacular views should not miss Las Toscas, at 736 metres.
Mazo - Gastronomy and Shopping:
There is a farmers' market every weekend in Mazo, where local products can be tasted and purchased. The market in Mazo attracts La Palma's locals and tourists. Inside local produce is for sale including fruit and vegetables, jams (including banana, fig and cactus) and honey, sauces (mojo verde, mojo rojo, alioli) biscuits and much more. Some of the stalls offer tastings of the jams and sauces.
The other part of the building contains fish and meat sections, a small section of flowers and a licquer tasting/selling stall. Upstairs there is a range of local embroidery and lace products. The lace is 'grown' and spun in a lace farm in El Paso. The prices made see high compared to factory produced equivalents, but this is 'the real thing', hand made individual artwork.
Outside there is usually a snackbar and a small bar. There are stalls with (mainly) not so local produce - rasta beads, wooden elephants etc.
Mazo - Fiestas:
In May, Mazo area celebrates the festival of Corpus Christi. The streets of the village (El Pueblo) are decorated with mosaics, cloth, arches, crosses and shields made from natural products including flower petals, seeds and rice.
