Costa Teguise

Costa Teguise - Overview:
Costa Teguise is one of the most attractive tourist destinations on Lanzarote and for those seeking a quiet Canarian holiday with first class accommodation, beaches, green spaces and the sensation of peace and freedom, then Costa Teguise is the ideal place to unwind in. With all the conveniences of a modern town, Costa Teguise is a placid resort, ideally suited to those seeking a relaxing holiday. Situated on Lanzarote's north-east coast, it is one of the island's main tourist resorts and is just a few kilometres away from the capital Arrecife. Costa Teguise (often referred to as 'La Villa' by the locals) is steeped in history and was the capital of Lanzarote up until the last century. It offers the visitor an up-market atmosphere with fine hotels, luxury villas and elegant apartments. The largest white beach 'Las Cucharas' is renowned for its optimal wind-surfing conditions, but it is also a firm favourite with holidaymakers who want to relax in peaceful surroundings.
Costa Teguise - Activities:
Costa Teguise offers a wide range of sporting and marine activities that can be enjoyed from its incredible beaches. These include diving, windsurfing, sailing and deep sea fishing. For those who prefer to remain on dry land, then there is a golf course, squash and tennis courts, paddle ball and dozens of private sports centres. Just outside Costa Teguise, on the road to Tahiche, there is an aqua park which is a fabulous fun day out for the whole family.
Costa Teguise - Nightlife:
Costa Teguise has a selection of restaurants, bars, discos and night clubs however, unlike Puerto del Carmen along the coast, it may be a little limited for serious 'clubbers' and night-owls'. Like many of the resorts on Lanzarote, Costa Teguise's nightlife could be classed as lively but not rowdy.
Costa Teguise - Shopping:
Teguise is one of the main cultural and tourist centres on Lanzarote. One of its most popular events is the Mercadillo. Every Sunday morning, the entire village is transformed into a grand open air market where shoppers can browse among the stalls of wares from artifacts to home made bread, all accompanied by groups of folk dancers and singers in native costume.
Costa Teguise - Climate:
As with the rest of the island of Lanzarote, Costa Teguise's weather is usually very good all year round. The beaches are a little windier than those in other resorts and this attracts many windsurfers. However this breeze can be a real benefit in the height of the summer.
Costa Teguise - Beaches:
Costa Teguise is well served for beaches with some fine golden sand. As for the neighbouring resorts, the beaches are very clean and well looked after.
Costa Teguise - Activities:
Windsurfing is the most popular pastime enjoyed in Costa Teguise. There are windsurfing schools, shops and equipment rental companies gathered around the beach at Las Cucharas. Most levels of experience are catered for, from absolute beginners upwards.
For the more energetic, cycling and running on Costa Teguise's relatively quiet roads can also be enjoyed here. Costa Teguise is also home to Lanzarote's first golf course, however more are under construction.
Costa Teguise - Shopping:
There is no shortage of shops aimed at the tourist sector in Costa Teguise, with a host of jewellers, discount electrical stores and general gift shops. There are also plenty of small supermarkets within the resort that generally stock a good range of international produce.
Costa Teguise - History:
In 1418, Maciot de Bethencourt first demarcated the town's boundaries making Teguise the first urban centre in the Canary Islands. Its domestic architecture can still be seen in the beautifully restored palaces and stately homes such as the Spinola Palace. Among the religious buildings are Ntra. Sra. de Guadalupe church and the convents of St. Domingo and San Francisco. And on top of Guanapay volcano sits the old castle of Santa Brbara. The locals proudly preserve the Teguise's 500 years of history, and the town was declared 'Conjunto Arquitectnico Histrico-Artistico (an architecturally historic artistic site) in the 1980s. Today it serves as an escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and a reminder of its past glory as Lanzarote's ancient capital.
Costa Teguise - Sightseeing:
Costa Teguise is only a 20 minute drive from Arrecife Airport and is a convenient base from which to explore Lanzarote's wealth of tourist and cultural attractions, including the Cueva de los Verdes, Jameos del Agua, the Jardin de Cactus and the northern fishing villages of Arrieta and Orzola.
Costa Teguise - Out and about:
Along the coast is the Famara inlet. Flanked by the spectacular cliff bearing the same name, Famara is a fabulous area for sports activities primarily surfing or paragliding. In this protected natural zone, you will find a quiet fishing village with several restaurants, supermarket and surf shops.
Just two kilometres off Lanzarote's north coast is the tiny island of La Graciosa, which is an excellent place for a day trip. The 'Chinijo Archipelago' is made up of La Graciosa and a group of neighbouring islets known as Alegranza and Montaa Clara, together with the East and West Roques. However, only La Graciosa has a resident population. Here approximately 500 inhabitants dedicate their lives to fishing and limited island tourism. The island is made up of volcanic sands and the southern coast is blessed with beautiful, wide, red sand beaches. The roads on La Graciosa are unpaved and sandy. The Gracioseras can often been seen early each morning sweeping the streets smooth of the previous night's footprints. Motor vehicles are strictly prohibited and limited to a handful of licensed vehicles for special purposes.
Due to its immense environmental value, the Chinijo Archipelago, together with the impressive Risco de Famara, was declared a 'Natural Park' in 1986. Of particular interest is that the surrounding sea was also included as part of this protected biosphere.
