Playa Blanca, Lanzarote, Canary Islands

Playa Blanca - Overview:

Located at the southern tip of the island, Playa Blanca was originally a tiny fishing village. With the development of tourism, since it became the port for ferries to Fuerteventura, Playa Blanca has grown, but although it has a good selection of shops, bars and restaurants it is essentially a quiet resort.

Playa Blanca - coastline:

The fabulous protected coastline is dotted with beaches and bays. One gigantic 9km bay shelters three other bays. These, in turn, contain smaller bays and coves. Together, they stretch from the lighthouse at Pechiguera Point in the west to Papagayo Point in the east.

Playa Blanca occupies approximately three quarters of this coastline, the remainder being the beaches and rugged coastline of Papagayo.

Most activities are centred around the old fishing village of Playa Blanca, but the town is now expanding rapidly eastwards and westwards. Many regard the beaches of Papagayo - virtually a continuation of Playa Blanca - as some of the best in the whole of Spain and the Spanish Islands.

The sea view from Playa Blanca is interesting as just 10km to the south, across a narrow stretch of the Atlantic Ocean, lies the island of Fuerteventura which can be seen clearly from most of the village of Playa Blanca. Tucked in between Lanzarote and Fuerteventura is the tiny uninhabited island of Lobos and this enchanting panoramic view fills half of the horizon.

The light conditions make the neighbouring island appear to strangely "move"! On a clear sunny Canarian day it seems as though one could almost swim across, whilst at other times it may be half hidden in cloud or completely invisible. On most evenings, the twinkling lights of Fuerteventura's harbour town of Corralejo can be seen dancing across the water.

Playa Blanca - beaches:

The white beach at the very centre of the town, from which Playa Blanca gets its name, has been awarded a European 'blue flag' - in recognition of its cleanliness. Playa Flamingo is located a few minutes' walk to the west and is a very attractive and safe beach suitable for families. Playa Dorada, a few minutes' walk to the east of Playa Blanca is another 'blue flag' beach ideal for early morning swimmers.

For those who like to explore a little further, there are the beautiful beaches of Papagayo. Here you will discover half a dozen sheltered, white sandy bays, nestled between rocky headlands. There is no development here as building is strictly prohibited to retain the natural environment and the beaches can be accessed by an unmade road.

For those who do not have a suitable vehicle, the beaches at Papagayo can be reached by sea taxi - an unusual and pleasant way to get there. The sea taxis take about half an hour to reach Papagayo from Playa Blanca, and they depart regularly from the harbour.

Playa Blanca - Out and about:

Apart from the attraction of beautiful beaches, Playa Blanca is a great area for walking. From the town there are delightful routes to the lighthouse in the west, and to Papagayo in the east. Each walk takes about an hour and are full spectacular views.

For those who are more energetic, a popular pastime is hiking inland to the enchanting mountain village of Femes. Situated 450 metres above sea level, Femes looks down on Playa Blanca and out across to the neighbouring islands of Fuerteventura and Lobos. It is well worth a visit, especially to see an absolutely stunning sunset.

A prominent sight in Playa Blanca is the Castillo de las Coloradas on Punta del Aguila - the castle on Eagle's Point. Whether or not Eagles fly here is another matter but Barbary Falcons and Egyptian Vultures have been spotted off the north of the island. The Castillo de las Coloradas has an interesting history. It was constructed during the rein of King Carlos III of Spain in 1769 to give the south of the island early warning of approaching pirates. It still retains many original inscriptions.

In addition to Playa Blanca's traditional harbour, a new sophisticated marina has been constructed between the centre of Playa Blanca and the Papagayo beaches. Marina Rubicon is perhaps one of the most beautiful marinas in Spain. It has more than 400 berths for luxurious leisurecraft and is located within a total area of 120,000 square metres.
