Deia Mallorca, Balearic Islands

Deia - Overview:

Deia is an absolute jewel of the Mediterranean and has been a haven for artists, musicians and writers since the early 20th century. A fabulous landscape that blends beautifully muted colours of ochre, olive green and brown, with a stunning backdrop of the towering mountains of the 'Serra de Tramuntana'. The village of Deia is topped by an ancient church perched on a hill overlooking the valley below. An ancient town, the original settlers in Deia built their houses using local materials, and today properties still blend beautifully into the landscape. A primarily agricultural area, the valley has an interesting system of open irrigation channels that date back to Moorish times.

Deia - History and Culture:

For many decades a vast array of artists, musicians and writers have made their permanent homes in and around the Village of Diea - perhaps the most famous being the writer and poet Robert Graves.

The village occupies a delightful position close to the sea and has been inhabited since pre-historic times. It is dotted with caves and natural springs. Deia was under Moorish rule between the 10th and 12th centuries and it was then that agricultural terraces were cut into the land and irrigation systems installed.

In the early 13th Century, under Christian rule, the village was passed to the Count of Rossello as part of neighbouring Valldemossa, from which it gained independence in 1583. Two monasteries were built, at Son Rullan, where Ramon Llull was to found his missionary school and also at Ca l'Abat.

The first wave of visitors began to arrive in the late 1800s, attracted by the beautiful landscape and the quiet and rural life in the village.

Deia - Today:

Today Deia retains its traditionally quiet atmosphere with a selection of restaurants and bars. The lovely town of Soller is just 10km along the coast where there is a wider choice.

Deia - Beaches:

At the end of a dusty track that winds through the olive groves you will discover the lovely 'cala' (cove), where a few remaining fishermen still go out at dawn to cast their nets. La Cala can be reached by car, but it is a long way round, where as a delightful stroll to reach it is a more direct route.
