The old Spanish word 'parador' describes an inn or stopping place and was the lodging traditionally offered in Spain to the gentry. In 1926 the Royal Tourist Commission, with the personal approval of Alfonso XIII, created a series of State Paradores. By offering a consistently high standard of hotel accommodation, it encouraged travellers to visit areas where it would not have been commercially viable for private enterprise to develop. Another aspect of the plan was to restore ancient monuments, palaces, castles and convents; thus preserving Spain's rich history whilst creating unique hotel accommodation.

Today there are Paradores throughout the whole of Spain. Most are ancient monuments or traditional buildings that have been sympathically restored in the local style; however the network has been completed with some modern hotels.

They bring together history and tradition with state-of-the-art facilities as part of a concept that prides itself on offering top quality, personalised customer care and service.

At any of the Paradores' restaurants, the menus are a gastronomical delight - a modern cuisine with typical menus from each region, prepared with exquisite taste and attention to detail to cater for the most discerning palate.
