Playa de la Arena, Tenerife, Canary Islands

Playa de la Arena - Overview:

Along the coast of Santiago del Teide lies Playa de la Arena, a small resort next to Los Gigantes, with an award winning beach of typically black soft sand, edged with palm trees and a broad, flower laden promenade. Opposite, a small parade of shops gives you ample opportunity to browse for holiday souvenirs. The small selection of typical Canarian bars, restaurants, and welcoming pavement cafes invite you to stay a while, perhaps to sip your coffee or sample the local banana liqueur as you gaze out to sea.

Playa de la Arena, Tenerife - Geography:

On the sunny west coast of Tenerife, Playa de la Arena is part of an expanding resort that also includes Puerto de Santiago and Los Gigantes. This part of the coast is dominated by massive black cliffs that drop dramatically into the Atlantic ocean.

Playa La Arena has a stunning natural beach formed of black sand, a by-product of the island's volcanic past. The resort behind it, along with neighbouring Puerto de Santiago is a growing tourist centre, offering ideal accommodation for family holidays in the sun. It's a quieter spot than some of Tenerife's more boisterous resorts, so would suit those seeking a relaxing holiday.

Accommodation in Playa de la Arena perches on hills overlooking the sea and its sheltered, gently shelving, black-sand beach is backed by landscaped gardens and young palm trees.

Playa de la Arena, Tenerife - Out and About:

Just 30km from Reina Sofia airport, visitors to Playa de la Arena can enjoy the majestic black cliffs, black sandy beaches and interesting little coves that characterise this region of Tenerife. Many hotels and apartments in Playa La Arena are located on hills above the bay, so offer fantastic Atlantic Ocean views.

From Playa La Arena you are just a mile away from the Acantilados de los Gigantes - 'cliffs of the giants'. Travel northwards up the coast and you'll find these awe-inspiring 600m high cliffs that appear to be erupting out of the ocean. Many holidaymakers opt for a boat trip to get the best views of these rocky giants, or spend an afternoon on the small beach at Los Gigantes to admire the unique scenery.

Playa La Arena resort is less than 20km from Mount Teide National Park, Tenerife's inland natural wonder, which is not to be missed. Guided trips enable visitors to learn how Mount Teide's volcanic eruptions (the last of which happened over 200 years ago) created this bizarre lunar landscape.
