Denia, Costa Blanca - Overview:

Beneath the dramatic Mount Montgo, at the northern end of the Costa Blanca, lies the pretty seaside town and fishing port of Denia. Located on the Mediterranean coast, halfway between Alicante and Valencia, the area is popular with tourists during the summer months. With Gandia in the north and Javea in the south, Denia is one of Valencia's nost visited cities during the summer.

Denia's old town has attractive buildings, a castle, colourful markets, interesting shops and restaurants, as well as 20km of seafront for all tastes. About 10km north of the town is an excellent 18 hole golf course, Regular ferry services run from the port to the Balearic Islands, and a narrow gauge railway follows the coast down from Denia to Alicante. Denia, Costa Blanca - Getting there:

Denia is approximately 85km north east of Alicante, along the Costa Blanca. It is best reached via the A7 highway or the N332, a wonderful road hugging the coastline of the costa blanca. If you have time to explore the beauty of the area via the N332 you will see fabulous views. Another nice way to enter the city is on the narrow gauge railway that runs between Denia, Benidorm and Alicante.

The average Denia weather reaches temperatures of up to 40 C in summer, but hardly less than 5C during winter time, making it an ideal holiday destination at any time of the year.

With 29,000 inhabitants, Denia's local population does not only make its living from tourism. Denia is home to one of the most important harbours in the area, with ferry connections to Ibiza and Mallorca. This ferry connection along with a large fishing fleet have made Denia a very prosperous city over the past years.

One of the most visited tourist attractions of Denia is the castillo (castle). Built in the 11th and 12th centuries, it affords a wonderful view over the sea, the city and the backlands. Within the castle you will find the Palau del Governador with its museum. Along with the other interesting museums in Denia, the Museo Etnologico will give you the opportunity to discover more about the rich history and culture of Denia.

Other recommended places to visit while in Denia include shopping along the main road of Calle de Marques de Campo. Here you will also find many bars and little restaurants. Make sure you taste some of the excellent cakes and sweets of local confectionery and bakery shops, Denia is famous for them.

While staying in Denia you could take a boat round trip to Javea, Altea and Benidorm. Local transport by bus or train is available, but if you want to see some of the beautiful places around the Costa Blanca, a holiday hire car is highly recommended.
