Peniscola, Costa de Azahar - Overview:
Peniscola is a pleasant resort on the Costa de Azahar. To the north of Alcossebre, a footpath follows the coast for about 15km all the way to Peniscola, an ancient fortress town, with a history going back to the Phoenicians. The castle at Peniscola, built by the Knights Templar, is famous for being the base of the heretic Pope, Papa Luna, in the 15th Century and was the setting for the final scenes of the film El Cid.

Peniscola, Costa de Azahar - Out & About:
By day the narrow streets are bustling with visitors and traders and at night the old Moorish town comes to life, with a labyrinth of streets lined with Spanish restaurants and bars. But Peniscola's attraction goes far beyond the old town.
To the north beach lovers can enjoy miles of sandy coastline reached by a stylish new promenade. To the south you can explore rocky coves towards the National Park of Sierra de Irta. The town and harbour areas near to the castle have been sympathetically developed with shops, restaurants and a pleasant area of parkland where the local weekly market is held.
Peniscola, Costa de Azahar - Activities:
Although Tourism is by far Peniscola's main source of income, fishing is still very much a part of everyday life here. The locals and restauranteurs flock to the harbour to greet the returning fishing boats and enjoy the best of the day's catch.
Peniscola, Costa de Azahar - History:
Many visitors will recognise Peniscola as featuring in the epic film 'El Cid', but the area's history goes much further back than that. All the early Mediterranean civilisations, including the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines and Arabs recognised the unique advantages of this beautiful town.
