Valencia - Geography:
This is a region of pine clad hills and orange groves which has one of the sunniest and driest climates in Spain. Because of its popularity with Spanish and foreign holidaymakers much of the coast has been developed, but there are still many quiet beaches and unspoilt coastal areas. Inland you will discover typical rural Spain; quiet villages tucked away in the mountains and historic country towns like Xativa and Alcoy. Valencia city is Spain's third largest city and has a wealth of old monuments, a beautiful cathedral and a variety of museums and gardens.
Valencia - Costa Blanca:
The Costa Blanca enjoys a perfect Mediterranean climate and has miles of excellent beaches and pine-covered coastal hills and cliffs. This coast of Alicante Province has become one of Spain's most popular holiday areas which has encouraged the development of some large resorts (such as Benidorm) but much of the building in the area has been restricted to private villa development
The coast between Calpe and Denia is particularly attractive with its orange cliffs, sandy coves and pretty little resorts with good shops and friendly bars and restaurants. In the hills inland, just about 10 minutes' drive from the coast are some peaceful Spanish villages like Jesus Pobre.
Valencia - Costa de Azahar:
Known as the 'Orange Blossom Coast' due to the vast number of orange groves that dominate the agriculture of the region, this Costa includes the coast of the provinces of Valencia and Castellon and stretches from Denia in the south to the estuary of the River Ebro in the north. Peniscola, one of the most interesting coastal towns in the region, is dominated by its famous castle where some scenes from the film El Cid were shot.
To the south of Peniscola you will find Alcossebre - one of the most pleasant small resorts on Spain's Mediterranean coast.
Valencia - Inland:
Inland from the coast, the rural countryside is covered with orange and olive groves, fruit orchards, vineyards and, in the hills, almond trees. Traditional villages and historic towns are dotted throughout the region and well worth exploring.
Valencia - Getting there:
Alicante airport receives numerous charter flights from London and most provincial UK airports, as well as scheduled flights from London. There are also scheduled services from London to Valencia.
